Reducing the Costs of Cover

Shopping for the right life insurance policy can be a difficult business, the insurance industry is incredibly competitive, but due to the advent of things like internet comparison sites there is not an enormous amount of difference to be found between prices from one company to the next. Instead the difference is made in the types of products that companies offer, and the discounts that they offer for customers who meet various criteria.

Despite this, there are certain things that you can always do to reduce life insurance quotes. Unlike other forms of insurance where you may be able to make significant savings with simple changes, some of the things that you might need to do in order to get cheaper life insurance may well be quite substantial.

Firstly, though, you need to know what type of coverage you want and how much coverage you will require. There are many different types of policies out there falling under the general headings of whole life and term life insurance. Do a bit of research and find out which is best suited for you, whilst you don’t want to be under-insured, there is little point in spending money on levels of coverage that you really don’t need.

Life insurance, just like any other form of insurance, involves the insurance company balancing the costs of the coverage that you require against the risks of them having to pay out. In terms of life insurance the key factor that determines the risk to which the insurer is exposed is your health. If you are a smoker, you will find that your rates are between 30-40% higher than for non-smokers, simply because smokers generally experience more health complication. If you have only recently quit smoking, most insurance companies will require you to have not smoked for at least a year before they will give you reduced premiums. Likewise, your general fitness will have an impact on the cost of your policy, if you live an energetic life with a good diet you will probably have to pay less for your policy.

You should also keep in mind that if you take up smoking during you should notify your insurance company, it will inevitably affect the cost of your premiums, but the insurance company may well be decidedly reticent about paying out if you are a smoker and haven’t notified them and the last thing you want is for a claim to be rejected.

If you are looking for a life insurance policy, or coming to the end of a term insurance policy and considering getting a new one, it might well be worth looking at a company like Legal and General who are offering particularly good deals at the moment.
